Case Study: Air Gaging Large Crankshaft Pins and Mains

A large project for a Tier 1 supplier that manufactures crankshafts for the agricultural and mining industries.

The gage

• A 16-input air gage measuring computer
• Over 180 features measured, including diameter at three positions and at 0° and 90° on the pins and mains
• Straightness, roundness and taper
• Serial numbers read from a data matrix on each crankshaft with a USB scanner

The data

All measurements are stored in Excel format on the customer's network drive, so any crankshaft's results can be recalled later. The system also has full SPC: part counters, histograms, Pareto charts, and X-bar/S and X-bar/R charts.
