Rifle Barrel Bore, Groove and Chamber Air Gages

Custom air gages for rifle barrel makers: measure bore and groove diameter in one pass down the full length of the barrel, and check chambers with a 3-circuit chamber gage. Non-contact, so the gage doesn't wear the rifling and the rifling doesn't wear the gage.

Bore and groove in one pass

We build bore gages and groove gages as separate spindles, or as a single 2-circuit spindle that reads the bore (land) diameter and the groove diameter at the same time. One pass down the barrel gives you both readings at every point, which cuts gaging time and handling, and means less wear on the gage and the barrel.

Pair it with a 2-input readout, such as the Air Gage Pro M5 with 2 inputs, to see bore and groove side by side, color-coded against tolerance.

Chamber gages

The chamber gage is a 3-circuit air gage: it measures the chamber body at two levels and the neck at one, so a single insertion tells you whether the chamber was reamed to size. Chamber gages are supplied with matching setting masters.

What we need to build your gage

  1. Bore and groove size and the tolerance on each
  2. Number of grooves
  3. Groove width
  4. Twist rate and direction, for example 1-in-8 right hand
  5. Barrel length

For chamber gages, send the chamber drawing or reamer print. We'll quote the spindles, masters and readout together.

Questions

Why air gaging for rifle barrels?

An air spindle reads without touching the bore, so it doesn't mark the rifling or wear with use. It averages the surface under the jets, is fast enough to check every barrel, and needs little operator skill.

Can one gage read both the land and groove diameter?

Yes. A 2-circuit spindle has jets on the lands and in the grooves, and a 2-input readout shows both readings at once.

Can I use my existing air readout?

Usually. Tell us the make and model and we'll build the spindle to match it, or supply an Air Gage Pro with two inputs.

How do I get a price?
